Mr Farinella completed medical school at the University of Palermo in Italy. Surgical training was at the University of Perugia in Italy, where MD qualification and CCT in General Surgery were achieved. Mr Farinella spent last two years of surgical training at the St Mark’s Hospital and Royal Marsden Hospital to gain exposure to complex GI and colorectal cases. Further specialist training in Laparoscopic and open GI surgery was obtained on the highly regarded North-West Thames rotation in London and a Laparoscopic fellowship with colorectal sub-specialty interest.
Mr Farinella has published many research papers, and presented his work at several national and international conferences. He has conducted numerous research projects and clinical audits, including the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), of which he is the Surgical Lead.
Mr Farinella performs Laparoscopic and open Gastro-intestinal Surgery; Laparoscopic division of adhesions for recurrent/chronic abdominal pain including biopsies; Laparoscopic and open Cholecystectomy (Gallstone Surgery); Laparoscopic/Robotic and open Hernia Surgery including inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and incisional hernias; Abdominal Wall Reconstruction; Coloproctology including treatment of haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula, perianal abscess and pilonidal sinus.
Mr Farinella has also successfully introduced the laser ablation of Haemorrhoids, Anal Fistula and Pilonidal sinus in the Trust as mini-invasive treatment for these conditions
